ABOUT US

Elli Flare-Jade Shoyo Laser

Symar Borzoi is located in the hills of Escondido about 30 miles north of San Diego, California. While San Diego is not the climate of their ancestors in Russia, the dogs enjoy cool sea breezes almost year 'round.

We have been involved in the sport of purebred dogs for more than 40 years. Over that time, we have crisscrossed the country and circled the globe competing in events with our dogs, enjoying new and wonderful experiences and making lifelong friends along the way. We are honored to share our lives with these beautiful hounds as they continue to teach us new things every day. They never fail to make us smile.

We consider ourselves to be "preservationist" breeders, striving to preserve the bloodlines of rare pedigrees. Preservation breeder dogs are among the healthiest canine colony known to exist in the world.

Preservation breeders are the ones doing testing. We can identify how dogs are unhealthy or healthy. Weaving pedigrees together, we are preserving these dogs in the best possible form that we can offer as companions to families. Because the most important part of a preservation breeder's life is to produce healthy and happy generations of dogs, our dogs go to families and live long happy lives with the least amount of health anomalies.

To that end, all of our breeding stock is tested for the recognized genetic problems in borzoi:

DM (degenerative Myelopathy, which is a debilitating disease that causes gradual paralysis in many dog breeds. It is caused by a degeneration of the spinal cord that onsets typically between 6 and 8 years of age. It presents first with the loss of coordination of the hind legs. It will typically worsen over six months to a year, resulting in paralysis of the hind legs.)

EYES: Our dogs are tested at age two and then annually thereafter.

HEART: Dogs are tested at age two by a certified cardiologist via echocardiogram. Testing is repeated annually to monitor for changes.

THYROID: Dogs are tested at age two. Testing is repeated every few years to monitor for changes.

All results from the testing are reported on the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals website, so you can be certain puppies from Symar have health tested parents.

That being said, from time to time we will reach back in history to use a dog no longer with us. The reason for this is to ensure genetic diversity and to prevent the loss of valuable borzoi pedigrees. Some of these dogs died long before testing for genetic disease became readily available. When that happens, we test the litter of puppies to help rule out unknown health issues coming from the sire.

The goal of a preservation breeder is not only to preserve everything for future generations, but also to identify those pedigrees that could be forever lost in another decade.

Our mission is to safeguard the breed and produce quality brozoi that are built to perform the job for which they were originally intended.

Symar Borzoi is a proud member of Santa Ana Valley Kennel Club, the Inland Empire Hound Club of Southern California, and the Turquoise Trail Borzoi Club. We also support the California Coursing Association.
